Book of Revelation Violence Quotes

How we cite our quotes: (Chapter:Verse)

Quote #7

The angel swung his sickle over the earth and gathered the vintage of the earth, and he threw it into the great wine press of the wrath of God. And the wine press was trodden outside the city, and blood flowed from the wine press, as high as a horse's bridle, for a distance of about two hundred miles. (NRSV 14:18-20)

And the angel thrust in his sickle into the earth, and gathered the vine of the earth, and cast it into the great winepress of the wrath of God. And the winepress was trodden without the city, and blood came out of the winepress, even unto the horse bridles, by the space of a thousand and six hundred furlongs. (KJV 14:18-20)

Probably the grossest image in all of Revelation. The fact that we're given the exact measure of how much blood there was makes this just a tiny bit more disturbing. Luckily we're not quite sure how big a furlong is.

Quote #8

The fifth angel poured his bowl on the throne of the beast, and its kingdom was plunged into darkness; people gnawed their tongues in agony, and cursed the God of heaven because of their pains and sores, and they did not repent of their deeds. (NRSV 16:10-11)

And the fifth angel poured out his vial upon the seat of the beast; and his kingdom was full of darkness; and they gnawed their tongues for pain, And blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores, and repented not of their deeds. (KJV 16:10-11)

Seriously? People are still not repenting? The murders? The locusts? The death angels? The wine press? The tongue gnawing? What is it going to take to convince you guys?

Quote #9

There came flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder, and a violent earthquake[…] The great city was split into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell. God remembered great Babylon and gave her the wine-cup of the fury of his wrath. And every island fled away, and no mountains were to be found; and huge hailstones, each weighing about a hundred pounds, dropped from heaven on people, until they cursed God for the plague of the hail. (NRSV 16:18-21)

And there were voices, and thunders, and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake[…] And the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell: and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath. And every island fled away, and the mountains were not found. And there fell upon men a great hail out of heaven, every stone about the weight of a talent: and men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail. (KJV 16:18-21)

Rome has fallen. Giant hailstones have, too. Right on top of unsuspecting sinners who were probably running and screaming for their lives.
