Sarah, Plain and Tall Chapter 2 Summary

  • Jacob isn't the only one who writes back to Sarah; the children start exchanging letters back and forth with her, too.
  • The kids are worried that Sarah won't want to come and marry their father because she seems to love the sea so much, and where they live is full of fields and flat land.
  • She tells Caleb that her cat's name is Seal and that she doesn't mind the fact that their house is small and doesn't have any close neighbors.
  • Finally, Sarah writes and says that she will come for a month to see if this arrangement will work. The kids encourage Jacob to write back and tell her to come; they're super excited to meet their potential stepmother.
  • Sarah writes to say she will come by train and has a yellow bonnet. She also tells Jacob that she's tall and plain—but that she'll sing for his children. This makes them smile.
