Sarah, Plain and Tall Chapter 6 Summary

  • Sarah wants to know what it's like in the winter where they live. Caleb tells her that it's cold and that there's a lot of snow, but the kids still go to school because their father drives them in the wagon—well, that or they walk the three miles there. Good times.
  • Because it's hot, Sarah says they should go swimming. Trouble is, there's nowhere to swim nearby… or so the children think.
  • Sarah knows better, though, and she leads the kids to the cow pond—which the children argue is just for cows—and tells them she'll teach them how to swim.
  • She shows them how to float on their backs, and then they push water at each other and pretend they're making real waves.
  • Afterwards, they all dry off and lay down in the field to stare at the sky. The kids are delighted to see that Sarah looks happy—like she might just stay with them after the month is up. Fingers crossed.
