• Before the aliens came, Cassie led a quiet life with her family. She had a best friend and a big crush—normal stuff.
• Her family survived the First and Second Waves. Her mother fell ill and died in the Third Wave. After that, her family moved to a refugee camp.
• The camp was attacked by aliens posing as human soldiers. First, they whisked away all the kids (including Sammy, Cassie's little bro).
• Then they shot and killed her father… and everyone else.
• Cassie, the lone survivor, watches the aliens blow the camp into bits.
• After that, she spends a lot of time by herself. She doesn't know that a Silencer, Evan, is watching her every move, waiting to kill her.
• On a routine water run, Cassie runs into a soldier and shoots him dead. She was afraid he was an alien.
• Soon after that, Cassie herself is shot in the leg. She ducks under a car. Then, she emerges, defiant. Let them kill her.
• Surprise: no one kills her. Instead, she wakes up in a warm bed that belongs to her savior, Evan, a nineteen-year-old guy.
• Despite her suspicions about Evan, Cassie warms up to him. Eventually they make out like crazy.
• After Cassie recovers, she and Evan set off to rescue Sammy. They're attacked by child soldiers, but Evan kills them all.

• Cassie's mad, but she eventually decides they should join forces for the rescue. They make a plan.
• Cassie infiltrates the military base where Sammy is being held. During the rescue, she runs smack into Ben Parish, who's also there to rescue Sammy.
• With Evan's help, they escape. Evan blows the building to bits and no one knows if he survived.
• Cassie and the gang are rescued by Ben's squad members. They drive off to find shelter.
