How we cite our quotes: All quotations are from Thelma & Louise.
Quote #1
THELMA: How long before we're in Goddamn Mexico?
This is the moment when Thelma confirms that she's going with Louise to Mexico. We don't blame her. There's not much to go back to if she were to stay in the U.S. (*cough* Darryl).
Quote #2
THELMA: It happened to you...didn't it? […] Okay, Louise…it's okay.
Over time, Thelma comes to understand that Louise was raped while she was in Texas. This explains why Louise doesn't want to drive through the state, and it provides a moment for Thelma to show compassion to Louise.
Quote #3
THELMA: That guy was hurting me. And if you hadn't come out when you did, he would've hurt me a lot worse. And probably nothing would've happened to him. Cause everybody did see me dancing with him all night. And they would've made out like I asked for it. And my life would've been ruined a whole lot worse than it is now. At least now I'm having some fun. And I'm not sorry that son of a b**** is dead. I'm just sorry it was you that did it and not me.
Louise was willing to sacrifice her own safety and innocence to save her friend, knowing full well the consequences. She's probably saved a few other women, too, given what we see of her behavior here.
Quote #4
THELMA: You're a good friend.
LOUISE: You too, sweetie, the best. How do you like the vacation so far?
THELMA: I guess I went a little crazy, huh?
LOUISE: No...You've always been crazy. This is just the first chance you've ever had to really express yourself.
Now, we don't recommend that everyone "express" him- or herself by holding up corner stores, drinking Wild Turkey, and locking cops in trunks, but we do want to draw your attention to the fact that Louise's support and acceptance of her friend has given Thelma the space really to be free. The best friendships do that.
