What’s Up With the Title?

The original title of the poem was…nothing. Literally; it was called “Untitled,” like all of her other poems (talk about confusing). So, for organizational purposes, many publishers started grouping Dickinson’s poems by the first line. In this case, it’s “We grow accustomed to the dark.” Fortunately for us, it’s a pretty good title; it sums up the theme of the poem pretty darn well.
