Whitford "Whit" Allgood Timeline and Summary

  • Whit and his family are about to be executed by The One Who Is The One, but we quickly rewind to the past so we can hear the story from the beginning. Phew.
  • Whit and his sister are under arrest. Government soldiers say they're being charged with being a wizard and a witch; Whit thinks he's just a regular teenager.
  • Whit's taken to a prison where he dreams of his girlfriend, Celia. She's been missing for three months, so he's really glad to see her.
  • Whit and Wisty are put on trial for their "crimes," which they still don't understand. It goes poorly and they are sentenced to death.
  • At the trial, Whit experiences his first wave of magic powers when he stops an object in midair with his mind. Cool.
  • He's transferred to another prison, a horrifying facility run by sadists. The good news is that Celia visits him in another dream.
  • Whit and Wisty are enduring a lot of medical tests and cruel punishments. For example, to gather his dinner of gruel and water, Whit has to run through a scary hallway filled with rabid dogs.
  • Soon thereafter Whit accidentally goes through a portal in the wall of his cell and finds Celia in a place called the Underworld. She tells him that she's been murdered and he's… well, pretty bummed.
  • Whit and Wisty return to court so the judge can yell at them some more. Once they're taken back to the prison, Byron Swain informs them that their execution has been moved up to the next day. Byron's pretty smug about it until Wisty turns him into a weasel.
  • Having received information from Byron the weasel, Celia locates Whit's prison cell and comes to break him out.
  • Whit and Wisty escape with Celia's help. They all go to the Shadowland, where they have a brief (but unpleasant) stay.
  • When they finally break through into the normal world again, the group heads to a department store where the child rebels have set up camp. On the way, Whit single-handedly takes out eleven soldiers. Yeah, it's impressive.
  • Soon Whit has to say his (final, for now) goodbyes to Celia. She can't stay in his world for very long or her spirit will be snuffed.
  • Whit and Wisty decide to help the rebels raid a children's prison (the first place where he was held). Whit has a lot of reservations about Wisty's wacky plan.
  • Disguised as a New Order guard, Whit gets in the prison gates and splits from Wisty to do his magic. He rescues a large group of kids… and then almost kills them all during the escape. Luckily, his magic comes in handy and everyone emerges unscathed.
  • Whit returns to the prison, where Wisty has released all the prisoners; she passes out, and he goes to collect her.
  • While Wisty is unconscious, Whit has a heart-to-heart with The One Who Is The One, who has appeared out of nowhere. The One tells Whit a six-part prophecy about all the stuff that's going to happen (presumably in the subsequent books in the series).
  • Some time later, Whit and Wisty go to see what has become of their home. Bad news: It's been demolished. Good news: The astral projections of his parents are there.
  • In the last chapter, we're back at the scene of Whit's execution. Will he be hung? Or will he and his family find a way out of this mess?
