Agnes Scott College

Hallmarks and Quirks

Things I'm Good At:

  • Girl power. After all, I've been devoted to educating women for well over one hundred years, and I show no signs of stopping.

  • Quality time outside. My campus is covered in lush grass and trees—lots and lots of trees—plus temps rarely dip below fifty degrees around here.

  • Self-scheduled final exams. (Yes, you read that correctly.)

  • The honor code. My honor system is one of the oldest in the country. Around here, you could lose your left leg and someone will hunt you down tirelessly to return it.

  • Community service and student run organizations. Show me a Scottie who hasn't done at least three community service projects or joined three student organizations by graduation and I'll show you someone who's probably posing as a Scottie for Halloween.

My Top 5 Must-Haves:

  1. Rain boots in every color and length imaginable. It gets dull wearing the same footwear all winter.

  2. All the laundry detergent you can fit in your preferred mode of transportation or else you'll have to hike to the nearest CVS.

  3. Five dollars on hand at all times for impromptu trips to Yogurt Tap.

  4. Lots of dorm room decorations and painters tape. Trust me honey, my walls are whiter than a fresh glass of milk.

  5. A wristlet with a clear plastic front for your I.D. card. Don't get me wrong, those cute little lanyards I give out during orientation are nice and all, but they're also red flags that announce newbie status. So ditch that fast if you want to hang with the cool kids.

Why You Might Have Heard of Me:

  • The Black Ring Mafia (I'd tell you about it but then I'd have to make you disappear.)

  • I've been the film site for over twenty movies, including The Blind Side, Scream 2, Big Mama's House, and Fried Green Tomatoes.

  • My annual Writer's Festival attracts award-winning writers like Robert Frost (yeah, the Robert Frost), Tracy K. Smith, Nick Flynn, and Terrance Hayes.

  • My Center for Writing and Speaking is used as a model for writing centers at other universities—so even if you don't attend me, you still might get a bit of the Agnes Scott touch during college.

On a regular Saturday night, you can find me...

Chances are pretty good I'm hanging with my fellow geniuses over at Georgia Tech or dancing the night away at Opera Nightclub in Atlanta, letting off steam after a busy week.

If I'm in need of a quieter night out, though, you can find me huddled around a table at Starbucks with close friends or enjoying some live music or open mic poetry at Java Monkey Music in Decatur.

Favorite Hangouts:

  • The library. 'Nuff said.

  • Letitia Pate Evans Dining Hall. Can you say crab cakes?

  • Alston Campus Center. Since this houses the bookstore, post office, grill, and café, I'm here pretty much constantly.

  • So long as it isn't raining, I like to get my study on at the Quad. Its beauty inspires me to greatness.

Quirks:

  • My incoming Scotties are called first years, not freshmen. Who would use a masculine noun to describe a class at a women's college anyway?

  • I let students study abroad their first year of college, because why not?

  • Even though I'm classified as a women's college, I happily admit both trans women and trans men.

  • I openly encourage students to design their own major.

Famous Alumni:

  • Jennifer Nettles, lead singer of Sugarland

  • Katherine Krill, CEO of Ann Taylor

  • Jean Toal, first female Chief Justice of the South Carolina Supreme Court

  • Mary Brown Bullock, executive vice chancellor at Duke Kushan University

  • Jessica Owen, venture capitalist and founder of Autism Acumen
