The level of fame for a Defense Engineer is virtually nil. There are a small group of people within the DoD who will know and admire the work that a Defense Engineer does but, as the security clearance level increases, the less an Engineer is able to talk about or be acknowledged for their work. It can be a thankless position if major recognition is what a person needs.
