Like many horticultural industries, discrimination can make it difficult for some to get started on a crew where flowers are grown. Minimal pay for crew personnel is the other deterrent. It would be easy for qualified horticultural professionals to get upper level jobs, except that such jobs do not often become available. People who have jobs in floriculture do not give them up easily. (Remember, it’s not about the money.) Minimal turnover keeps job openings rare, and can also minimize the prospect of promotion to better employment. New or expanding floricultural operations do the most hiring. They are “blossoming,” if you will.
