20-Year Prospect

20-Year Prospect

What do you suppose is the likelihood that we learn all there is to know about disease in the next twenty years? Slim to none? Yeah, that pretty much sums it up.

Pathologists operate at the forefront of disease research. They're the ones trying to solve the difficult diseases and they're the ones called on to research when new ones pop up. We're pretty sure that there will still be gunky medical problems to solve in a few decades, so pathologists will be secure in their field.

In fact, growth for all medical occupations is projected to rise by eighteen percent before 2022—much faster than the average for all careers (source).

Suffice it to say there will definitely be open positions for pathologists in twenty years. Even if you finish all that schooling and find that the day-to-day stresses of being a doctor aren't for you, there are open pathology positions at nearly every medical school in the country. Basically, if you can get yourself that degree (or those degrees, to be more specific), you'll be just fine.
