You'll get some nice accolades if your research leads to some exciting new development, but you won't be rewarded with any fame, per se. That's why you really should continue to pursue your competitive eating career on the side.

While your face may never make it onto a child's trading card ("I'll trade you your Dr. Phillips for my Dr. Kerns..."), the role of pharmacists is expanding nowadays. With more pharmacists branching out into drug research, you could achieve some fame if you make a major discovery or breakthrough.
