Common Core Standards

Grade 1

Reading RL.1.7

Use illustrations and details in a story to describe its characters, setting, or events.

This standard is pretty straightforward: as long as the student can describe a story's characters, settings, or events with something from the story itself, then this standard has been met. It does not have to be much more than a surface-level observation (such as a character liking red because all of his shirts being red).
