Common Core Standards

Grade 3

Reading RL.3.4

Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, distinguishing literal from nonliteral language.

This Common Core Standard is all about teaching students not to take everything literally, which they might have done up until this point. When we say that a situation is as bad as accidentally dropping a kid down a well, we're not saying that a baby was literally dropped down a well—we're only saying that the situation is really, really bad.
