Grade 1

Writing W.1.1

Write opinion pieces in which they introduce the topic or name the book they are writing about, state an opinion, supply a reason for the opinion, and provide some sense of closure.

In kindergarten, students could use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to state their opinions. This standard asks first graders to hone their writing by voicing their opinions in...well, writing. We're not asking for lengthy essays yet—one or two simple sentences will suffice. But stating what they're talking about, how they feel about it, and providing some closure is ideal.
