Corban University

Hallmarks and Quirks

Things I'm Good At:

  • Creating top-notch future educators. My elementary education majors are sparkling creatures of promise and knowledge.

  • Volunteering for non-profits. My students are required to complete four forty-hour projects during their time here. It's good for the soul and it makes the world a better place.

  • Fostering community. We put different people in a (metaphorical) blender and keep the lid on. Yum.

  • Church ministry, business, communications, health science, and even journalism. I do it all.

  • Cross-cultural engagement, especially with my partners in Indonesia and Germany.

  • Soccer. You'll want to go to at least one game.

My Top 5 Must-Haves:

  1. A Bible. You will use it all the time.

  2. Hammock. Homework is done best while swinging between two trees. Or posts. Or people. I go for what's available.

  3. Raincoat. Leave your umbrella at home my friends because Oregonians don't use umbrellas. It's in the state constitution...or at least it should be. If you're not from Oregon, feel free to use umbrellas. We don't want anyone to melt.

  4. A car, so you can go on adventures and drive into town. Salem is not within walking distance. The police station, however, is right around the corner. Handy.

  5. A friendly face. No grumpy cats, please.

Why You Might Have Heard of Me:

  • I pop up if you google Christian universities in Oregon.

  • I graduate tons of elementary teachers.

  • I'm that school with the 60/40 girls to guys ratio.

  • Remember I said I was a TB hospital in another life? You can still explore the secret tunnels connecting my oldest buildings, if you can find the entrance.

On a regular Saturday night, you can find me...

I might be watching Netflix in the dorms, rehearsing for that semester's play, having Bible study, squeezing in some last minute worship practice for church the next morning, pushing people into the push bush, surfing the web, or even studying. I do that on occasion. When I'm tired of sticking around campus, I head on over to Portland for all of the weird it has to offer.

Favorite Hangouts:

  • Dorm rooms and lobbies. I'll be there Netflixing solo or in a group. Popcorn is always involved.

  • The Common Grounds, the on campus coffee shop. Hey, it's not fancy but it's homey, and the company's great.

  • Coffee shops in Salem like Archive, The Governor's Cup, and Broadway Coffeehouse are always filled with Corban students.

  • The dining hall. And remember, if you meet your future spouse there, you're going to have to invite the whole school to the wedding. Wink wink.

Quirks:

  • I can probably name any song your mom liked in high school and has a tendency to crank when she's baking cookies on a summer night.

  • I have a campus pooch named Shadow. He's a Malamute/German Shepherd mix and he hangs with my campus safety officers. If you want comfort before a big test or just some play time, text campus safety and Shadow will save the day. Talk about a mood boost.

Famous Alumni:

  • Current president of Corban, Dr. Sheldon Nord

  • A lot of cool and talented people, but not many are famous TBH. Probably because they're too busy being awesome to be in the spotlight.
