California State University--Humboldt

About Me

Intro

Humboldt County is the land that time forgot. Located five hours north of San Francisco on California's remote Lost Coast, I'm nestled in an old growth redwood forest and shrouded in fog for most of the year. It should come as no surprise that movies like The Lost World and Return of the Jedi were filmed up here—it truly feels like a different world. This is part of what makes me so amazing.

Since I'm surrounded by such awesome nature, I'm really chill and outdoorsy. Like, really chill. Humboldt is famous for two things: Trees and…uh, "trees."

There is definitely a strong counterculture alive and well among my student body, which probably has something to do with Humboldt's notoriety as a destination for stoners. But don't let that fool you: There is so much more to me than that. Seriously.

I'm the kind of person that loves to spend time outside. I take nature walks with my friends and identify various flora and fauna along the way. I live for eccentricity, and not in an ironic way. Sure, I'm quirky and weird, but I wouldn't call myself a hipster—I'm definitely not as pretentious. Instead of scolding you about your GMO consumption and carbon footprint, I'm more like, "Hey, whatever floats your boat, man."

And with a unique array of programs ranging from botany to marine biology to scientific diving, I can all but guarantee you'll find something to float your boat here. If you're looking for a school that might as well be located on the Forest Moon of Endor with students who aren't too different from ewoks themselves, then I'm the place for you.

Name

The Lumberjacks. My mascot is Lucky the Logger, which is a tad ironic considering there are many proud environmentalists among my student body.

Hometown

Arcata, California. Cool, foggy, and home to the country's first Community Forest. Talk about righteous.

Birthdate

June 16, 1913

Body Type

Humboldt is known for its moody weather, so I'm always sure to dress in layers. Lots of layers. I'm talking pants or legwarmers under my tapestry skirt, undyed wool socks with my Birkenstocks, and a vest over my HSU sweater. You may call me frumpy, but I'm just a classic Humboldt Honey and darn proud of it.

As for my body...well, I'll be real with you: I'm skinny-fat. I'm a small school that feels big. My campus is pretty large, but you realize how few people there are when you run into the same person three times in one day. Arcata is a very small town as it is, and with less than 10,000 undergrads, I'm one of the smallest California State Universities. But what I lack in population I make up for in natural beauty. There are more trees than people around these parts, and that's just the way I like it—it gives me way more opportunities to connect with Mother Earth.

Current Living Situation

Most freshmen live in my dorms. The rooms themselves are pretty standard, but they're in an awesome location, surrounding a grassy meadow and bordering the redwood forest.

Upperclassmen live in rental houses around Arcata, which is very much a hippie-college town. Most parties take place in grand old Victorians that have probably seen better days, but are still awesome and unique in their own old-timey ways.

There are also quite a few apartment complexes around town, but they tend to be kind of old and mildew-y. Although most people live with other students, it's not uncommon to rent out just a room and live with an old cat lady or a cool young couple. Remember, I'm all about whatever floats your boat.

Relationship Status

I am all peace, all the time. Competitive vibes harsh my mellow, so I don't bother forming tenuous rivalries with other schools. I'm also pretty isolated up here in the Northwest corner of California, so I don't have to worry about other schools getting all up in my space either.

Religion

Unless you count Tibetan prayer flags and "Coexist" bumper stickers, there is no religious affiliation here.

Politics

I'm proudly liberal—for the most part. I have a reputation for being a crunchy hippie school, and my students get especially riled up over environmental issues. There is plenty of activism focused on social and environmental justice happening on campus and around Arcata, but I also have a healthy dose of conservative forester types in my student body. Whether you lean left or right, you'll be sure to find good friends and a strong sense of community here in Humboldt.

You should apply to me if...

you like granola, reggae, handcrafted eco-friendly jewelry, and sprouted grains.
