About Me

Intro

I am your classic crunchy granola school: Part hippie, part hipster, 100% Portland. For me, being outdoorsy is pretty much a way of life—and why wouldn't it be when you're surrounded by incredible forests, only a short drive away from the coast, and near some of the best hiking in the Pacific Northwest?

I pride myself on being the nice guy. Everyone here is welcoming and you'll find all types of students and communities around campus—except for fraternities and sororities.

My students are incredibly bright and service-oriented. In fact, I'm one of the top producers of Fulbright scholars in the country. I also have awesome international affairs and environmental science programs, but that doesn't mean my students are chained to the library.

Instead, many are out in the field applying their knowledge to problems they're passionate about. I'm all about hands-on learning, giving back, and encouraging my students to explore, learn, and work together.

So if you wear mostly Patagonia, drink tea out of a mason jar, and prefer a party in the woods instead of the club, I'm no doubt the place for you.

Name

The Pioneers, but everyone calls my athletes the Pios. My mascot is Pio the Newfoundland dog, who you will find roaming around campus on game days.

Hometown

Portland, Oregon. Also known as the City of Roses, which grow in abundance around my beautiful campus.

Birthdate

1867

Body Type

Simply put, I'm a bombshell. I may be small, but I've been lauded for my beauty time and time again. My campus is stunning, full of flowers, ponds, charming old buildings, and with some of the best views of Mt. Hood in all of Portland. With only 2,100 undergrads, I definitely feel like a small school, but have no fear—since I'm in Portland, there are plenty of student-aged people all over the place.

Current Living Situation

My students are required to live in the dorms for the first two years of school. My dorms aren't anything too special, except for a few of the newer ones that could easily be mistaken for a ritzy ski lodge. Most upperclassmen move off campus into the surrounding neighborhood or venture across the river to the east side of Portland, which is where most of the hipsters dwell.

Relationship Status

In athletics I compete against Willamette University and George Fox University, but it never gets too intense. I'm also often compared to nearby Reed College, but we're on very friendly terms.

My real rival? Polluters. The Princeton Review ranked me as the greenest college in the nation. My students and I are very environmentally conscious. We pretty much funnel all our competitive energy toward making the world a more sustainable place. You can thank me later.

Politics

I'm very liberal, very political, and very pro-activism. The school newspaper, The Pio Log, is often a platform for debate, and my students won't hesitate to raise their voices if they see something that's wrong in the world. If you think Reagan was the greatest president the country has ever seen and you hate big government, you might feel a little out of place here. But don't let that scare you away—I appreciate hearing arguments from each and every angle and encourage my students to do the same.

You should apply to me if...

you love brooding in the rain, composting, and literally chasing waterfalls.
