Mills College

Hallmarks and Quirks

Things I'm Good At:

  • Transgender equality. I was the first women's college to have an admissions policy allowing transgender students.

  • Educating educators. My School of Education is intense, especially with its child development programs.

  • Music. I have an international reputation for being at the forefront of experimental music.

My Top 5 Must-Haves:

  1. Mode of transportation. A car or bus pass (clipper card) to get off campus and around the Bay Area is necessary to avoid going stir-crazy.

  2. Hair dye. My ladies' heads are a rainbow of turquoise, hot pink, purple, andgreen.

  3. Male friends. You'll be surrounded by women all day, so it'll be nice once in awhile to bro-out and play some flag football or something.

  4. Combat boots. Everyone has a pair.

  5. Top Ramen. This is a night owl staple. All on-campus eateries close by 10:00PM.

Why You Might Have Heard of Me:

  • There was a strike in the 1990's when I almost allowed male undergrads to apply. Sorry, bro.

  • In 2014, I was the first women's college to make a transgender admissions policy. Basically, you can apply if you identify as a woman or if you do not fit into the gender binary.

On a regular Saturday night, you can find me...

  • At an event on campus. There are poetry slams, dance shows, movie nights, and sometimes school dances.

  • On the shuttle bus, on my way to the BART or to UC Berkeley for a night away from campus.

  • Studying, because most social interactions involve studying here.

Favorite Hangouts:

  • The Tea Shop. It stays open until 10:00PM and serves coffee and espresso drinks, sandwiches, and grill food to power your brain while you cram for your next exam. There are a variety of vegan and vegetarian options, as well.

  • The dorms. Like I said, my campus is kind of isolated, but students seem to have no problem hangin' out in the dorms for Doctor Who + Ben & Jerry's marathons. Pro-tip: The pints are nine dollars here. Best venture to Walgreens to stock up.

  • Telegraph Avenue in Berkeley. Possibly indulging in fro-yo, CREAM, or even just people-watching.

Quirks:

  • There's a week towards the end of the month where everyone's periods sync up. This is not a myth.

  • You have a required "how to use a computer" online class to complete your first year. I know you're a millennial, but I just want to make sure…

  • We have this program called "4 + 1" where you can basically get your undergraduate and graduate degree in five years. If you come in with AP credit, you might even be able to get them both in four years. Speedy.

  • Fox News listed us as one of the best college cafeterias and they weren't joking. (Fox News? Joke? Please.) The food here is incredible. Vegan and vegetarian options are served daily.

Famous Alumni:

  • Barbara Lee, a congresswoman

  • Noah Georgeson, a kooky musician

  • Yvonne Harrison Solow, author of Gene Roddenberry: The Last Conversation

  • Sakae Roberson Manning, VP of international marketing at Paramount Pictures

  • Renel Brooks-Moon, the first female African-American sports announcer
