About Me

Intro

I have a saying that I'm quite fond of: "OC is home." Some people might think it's just a snappy adage that looks good on a t-shirt—and don't get me wrong, it looks great on a t-shirt—but I really believe it.

My campus is home to anyone and everyone. Hipsters, athletes, grade-A perfectionists, and even those who are still finding their way can find their place here. As some really smart guy once said, all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.

It's my job to help you grow in wisdom, in stature, and ultimately closer to our Father. Your mission is another top priority of mine—whatever your personal goal is, I want to help you achieve it.

We go above and beyond here, fertilizing skills and discovering potential. I fully prepare my students for their respective fields; moreover, I actually get them jobs. We're a studious bunch, sure, but that's just the tip of the iceberg. You'll make friends for life, you'll make memories for life, and most of all, you'll have family for life.

Name

The OC Eagle, so you'd better start sharpening your talons. My colors are silver and maroon, very fashionable.

Hometown

What's my hometown? Well, that's a trickier question than it should be. Ask anyone at OC what town they're in, they'll say Edmond, an affluent suburb of Oklahoma City.

In reality, however, OKC redrew its boundaries to include my campus, because I'm that amazing. Still, the school is surrounded by Edmond on all sides, so no worries if you need to run to Target real quick before heading into OKC for a Thunder game.

Birthdate

I was founded as "Central Christian College" in 1950 (the same year the modern credit card was invented, fun fact). I opened in Bartlesville, OK, with a whopping ninety-seven students. In 1958, I moved to the campus we all know and love on the outskirts of OKC, and in the '90s, I traded the "College" title for "University."

Body Type

Alright, let's get this out of the way. I'm a small school. Like, pretty small. In the fall of 2014, I had 1,977 undergrad students. But you know what that means, right? An awesome student-faculty ratio. I have a 14:1 student to professor ratio, so prepare to be taught by someone who knows your name and personally wants to see you succeed.

While many small universities feel insecure about their body size, I embrace it. My student body grows every semester, and as a very-famous tortoise once said, "Slow and steady wins the race."

Current Living Situation

Freshmen are required to live in dorms on campus with a curfew. It's not that I want to keep you under lock and key, Alcatraz-style—I want to keep you out of trouble. Once you reach your second year, prepare to feel like Dobby with a sock because you'll be free...from the curfew. But you'll still have to live in the dorms.

Juniors and seniors can live in the on-campus apartments that range from adequate but effective to high-class and attractive. Married couples have their own residential building where they can play board games or cook turkeys or do whatever married people do.

My dormitories aren't five-star hotels, but they're functional and cozy. You can bunk solo, with a roommate, or in a suite if you so choose. The University House dorm is extremely upscale to the point that you may expect little mints to show up on your pillow. Apartments come with a kitchen, furniture, and a cable outlet. I also have campus-wide Wi-Fi. Oh yeah.

Relationship Status

I have friendly competition with fellow Church of Christ schools Harding, Pepperdine, Abilene, and Lipscomb. We all like to poke fun at one another.

Southern Nazarene University is my biggest rival in soccer and basketball. Though my Eagles fight heroically, no one sulks if they beat us. Of course, winning isn't frowned upon either...

When it comes to academics, though, I'm one of the best schools in the state. Southern Nazarene can't touch me. You SNUs, you lose.

Religion

We wear our hearts on our sleeves here at OC. We love Jesus and are not afraid to let the world know. I firmly believe that one can be both a Christian and a scholar. God smiles when we strive to discover more of His creation. There's no conflict between the best in education and the best in Christian faith.

I was founded by the Church of Christ, and the daily chapels reflect that tradition—that is, all music is a cappella. And yes, there is daily chapel, but it's not tedious or obnoxious; at its best, it's thirty minutes a day you can focus entirely on God. And if nothing else, it's a brief oasis in the middle of the day where you can relax and hang with your friends.

About half of my student body is of the Church of Christ faith. There are several other Christian denominations present on campus, as well as those completely unaffiliated, believe it or not.

I don't judge or condemn or tsk-tsk those who believe differently from us. I welcome all faiths and lifestyles as long as we're on the same page about your intellectual and social responsibilities—have integrity, study hard, and treat everyone as you'd want to be treated, and we'll get along great.

Politics

I'm a Christian school in Oklahoma, what do you think? Yeah, we lean conservative—and by "lean," I mean we throw all our weight that direction. That being said, I also have a solid liberal base, and everyone gets along well. In fact, I encourage discussion and friendly debate. I don't police people's opinions or shut down political conversation.

You should apply to me if...

…you love Jesus, love people, love learning, and love choreography.
