St. Catherine University

About Me

Intro

Let's get one thing straight: I don't go by St. Catherine. Seriously, don't call me that. It's too long, too stuffy, too...not me. I prefer to be called St. Kate's.

I'm a private women's university located in beautiful St. Paul, Minnesota. Now, the words "private women's university" might freak you out at first, but I promise you I'm not a convent. I'm out to empower young women and change the world, and you can't do that if you're stuck inside.

I like to learn everything I can now so that I can make a difference in the world. It's hard work, but you don't become famous for your pre-med program by slacking off. And don't get me wrong, I still love to get crazy at an all-night study party.

I also have a really big heart—social justice is big around here, and a lot of my grads go into public health and social work. Even my future CEOs and politicians want to work for the greater good.

If you're smart and sociable, and you've got a yen to make a difference, we'll get along great. Just be sure to pack your snow boots. I may be kind, but Minnesota winters aren't.

Name

Katie—or Wildcat, if I'm feelin' fierce.

Hometown

St. Paul, Minnesota. I'm up on a little hill with a great view.

Birthdate

1905, when the Sisters of St. Joseph decided to stick it to the haters and educate women. It was kind of a bananas idea at the time, but it's since caught on.

Body Type

I like to keep it small, with about 5,000 students overall and an average class size of eight to twenty-five. I also like to keep it diverse, with weekend, evening, online, and day students from across the country and around the world. My campus is a great little oasis in the middle of the city, so you'll never have to worry about finding a quiet spot to think.

Current Living Situation

I really want everybody to be comfortable, so I don't require anyone to live in dorms—not even freshmen. I've got five dorms on campus, one of which has a Harry Potter-themed floor (nope, not joking); there are also four apartment buildings for students, which I usually reserve for upperclasswomen.

If university-owned housing isn't your cup of tea, I'm happy to let you commute from a place in the Cities or even the comfort of your own home. Some of my students drive all the way from Wisconsin every day. I say, do what makes you happy.

Relationship Status

I believe that sharing is caring, which is why I've teamed up with St. Thomas, Hamline, Augsburg, and Macalester—four other private colleges in the Twin Cities—to form the Associated Colleges of the Twin Cities. We allow cross-registration, so if there's a class that you're dying to take at another college, you can. Just don't forget about me, 'kay?

Religion

With "Saint" in my name, you can probably guess that I've got at least some vague connection to a religion. I was indeed founded as a Catholic university, but I'm accepting of all religions and belief systems. I have a Campus Ministry to provide support for students of any beliefs and focuses on social justice.

Politics

I'm a liberal Catholic university, which can get a little crazy sometimes. I'm proud of my faith tradition, but I'm not going to push anything on you. I think that fighting injustice is more important than quibbling over whether or not you went to chapel this week.

You should apply to me if...

you've got brains, guts, and a thing for social justice.
