Southeastern Louisiana University

About Me

Intro

I'm a balanced sort of place: academically focused, athletic, and extra extracurricular. Mention my name to anyone outside of Louisiana and...they'll probably be scratching their heads. But it's no biggie. I like that I'm a hidden gem of the south; blanketed by magnolia trees and sunshine. I don't feel the need to toot my own horn, it's all about friendship and self-discovery with me. Who else can boast that they literally have a Friendship Tree?

I may not have a long prestigious history, but my students have a fabulous time pursuing their undergraduate degrees here. I may have just nineteen graduate degree paths, but that just means I have more energy to focus on each of them.

Let's get one thing straight: I'm anything but the "Slow Learner University" that snarky high school seniors have taken to calling me. A semester here will show you how wrong they are. I may be small, but I hold myself to the same standards that the big guys do. I've got tons of great features, from my amazing computer labs to the environmental research I do. There are plenty of perks of being a student at SLU.

I'm not the sort to cling to one identity. Sure I have a lot of areas that I excel at, but I'm laid back and accepting of every discipline. That's probably why I bounce around so much: checking out a concert performance one day, then a play, doing research in the swamp, and catching a football game on Saturday. You may think I'm scatter-brained, but I'm just a people-person who wants to try a bit of everything.

Name

The Lions (not to be confused with LSU's Tigers)

Hometown

Do you know where New Orleans and Baton Rouge are on a map? Basically try to find the mid-point between them. Okay, so that technically would drop you into Lake Maurepas with some Cajun fishermen…so go a little north from there until you're above the lake. That's where I'm from. I'm in Hammond, LA. Just look for pine and magnolia trees, and you've found me. There's a nice mix of old-city feel with the buzz of modern businesses.

Birthdate

1925

Body Type

I'm a bit hefty, though not pouring over. I've got 13,000 undergrads and about 2,000 grad students. I'm on the heavier end of being a mid-sized school and big enough to require a parking garage. At a petite 363 acres, it takes a brisk twenty-minute walk to reach the far ends of the campus.

In the middle of any weekday, you'll see plenty of students walking around outside or sunbathing in one of the many student hangout areas. The fall and spring semesters here in Louisiana have mostly pleasant weather, so students like to work on their tan between classes. If you come for the summer session, well…it's your sweaty funeral.

Current Living Situation

A lot of students live within ninety minutes of the school and choose to commute. Those who live on campus have over a dozen halls to choose from, though some are exclusively for certain majors or those active in the Greek circles. The quality is a little hit and miss. The older halls were designed by a guy who designed some of the state's prisons...so you may want to look into the floor plans first. If you're an overachiever, my Honors program is awesome and so are the Honors dorms.

If you're in a fraternity or a sorority, there are living options on the edges of campus. Just be prepared to be constantly distracted from studying with hose fights or late night parties. There are also numerous apartments available for students in sororities, fraternities, and student organizations next to the University Center. It's called The Village, and if you want to feel fancy and live in a gated community while you're a college student, it's the place to be.

Hammond itself offers many rental options close to the college. You can rent out a room in a historical building and marvel at the fabulous exposed brick like a hipster.

Relationship Status

I like to think my archrival is LSU, but they're the ultimate sports college. It's like trying to dropkick the guy with a black belt. Besides, we're in different divisions. My actual football rivals are Nicholls State and Northwestern State, but I get along with everyone for the most part.

Religion

Nope, nada. There are church organizations affiliated with me, though.

Politics

I'm a politically-balanced school. Being a college in the south gives you a nice balance of academic liberal leanings and southern conservative tradition. The political atmosphere is pretty laid-back in general here.

You should apply to me if...

you're from Louisiana and your TOPS tuition money is burning a hole in your pocket. Sure, you don't know what you want to major in yet, but you can figure it out on campus.
