1 Chronicles ends with the death of David and the start of Solomon's rule. You need to flip over to 2 Chronicles to find out exactly what happened after Israel's greatest king passed the torch. All in all, it's a pretty good ending and a nice tidy way to wrap up our story.
Or at least it would be if it were actually an ending. But when 1 Chronicles and 2 Chronicles were originally written they were one book. That means what looks like a finale was actually meant to be a midpoint. But when the book was translated into Greek, the translator hacked it in half.
Why the contrived ending? When they were originally written, Bible books didn't have divisions like chapters and verses. Later editors went in and added those later in an effort to make things simpler for readers. Long books like Samuel, Kings, and Chronicles were divided into two parts. It's sort of the same reason that Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows ended up being two movies instead of one. It's a little easier to digest that way.
