Violet Alden Timeline and Summary

  • Violet and her family are sleeping at the bakery for the night, but Jessie wakes her up in the middle of the night because the family is running away.
  • The kids walk for several nights, sleeping during the day so they won't be seen.
  • The children begin living in a boxcar. Violet spends her days helping Jessie cook, clean, and take care of their little brother, Benny.
  • One day, Violet's whole family goes with Henry to Dr. Moore's house. They pick cherries in the doctor's orchard.
  • Later, out of nowhere, Violet becomes very ill; Henry becomes so worried that he goes to Dr. Moore for help.
  • Dr. Moore brings Violet back to his house, where he stays up with her all night. She's going to be OK, but she'll need some time to fully recover.
  • Meanwhile, Mr. Alden comes to stay at Dr. Moore's, but he doesn't tell Violet or the other kids his true identity. (He's their grandfather.) After the other kids find out, Mr. Alden tells Violet the truth.
  • Violet makes a full recovery, then she and her family go to live with Mr. Alden.
