Character Role Analysis

Ennis Del Mar

We spend the most time with Ennis over the course of the movie and learn the most about him, making him our protagonist by default. He is also your stereotypical cowboy. Quiet. Reserved. Not good with emotions. And thinks he's heterosexual.

Along with Ennis, we enter a type of relationship between cowboys that many didn't know existed. But just because Ennis is our protagonist doesn't mean he's likable. Ennis is too reserved to be romantic toward Jack. He's cruel to Alma. And he's a terrible father. But he realizes this, even if he realizes too late. Wanting to change is a good quality for a protagonist to have.
