Character Analysis
Even though he never makes an appearance in the book, Gercourt is the prime mover of the action. He's a former lover of the Marquise who left her for someone else—for a former lover of Valmont's, actually. He's the object of her revenge. Unattached again, the Comte plans to marry Cécile Volanges once he returns to France from abroad. According to the Marquise, he's a gentleman who prefers blondes.
