Dag is the journalist writing an exposé on the Swedish sex trade which will make public the names of police officers, journalists, and politicians who slept with prostitutes or were involved in the sex trade. He's murdered by Ronald Niedermann after he calls Nils Bjurman asking questions about Zala. Salander feels responsible for his death because she's the one who put the Bjurman-Zala connection in his mind.
