John F. Galardi Jr. Timeline and Summary

  • John's friend Brian tells him about The Sound of Music auditions at school. Brian's going to try out, and wants John to as well. Yeah right.
  • On the weekends, John heads out to his dad's place in Boston. He's been working on his first zine after reading some zines he really likes, and he decides he'd like to meet the author of his favorite one, Escape Velocity, so he waits for her at Tower Records. There, he meets Marisol, who is a little freaked out by the whole thing, but pretty soon figures out that John is completely harmless.
  • She agrees to meet up with him the following weekend and brings her friend Birdie along to suss the guy out.
  • Birdie decides John isn't gay, but Marisol gives him tips on writing his zine anyway.
  • Marisol and John meet up on weekends and talk on the phone during the week. Sometimes they read each other their latest work, or other times they share stories of broken hearts and frustration at their parents.
  • One day, Marisol invites John to a concert. Even though he's never heard of the artist, he agrees to go.
  • They enjoy the music, and afterward, Marisol figures out she's missed the last train. John doesn't want her to get hurt walking home alone so late, so he offers for her to crash at his dad's place.
  • They sleep in separate beds, but John's dad assumes they are doing the dance with no pants and gets excited—finally, something he can relate to about his son.
  • When John tells his dad that Marisol is gay, he's annoyed, but Marisol is glad he told the truth.
  • John invites Marisol to prom—as friends—and she says yes (reluctantly).
  • At the prom, Marisol is surprised to learn that John's friends think she's his girlfriend. She's even more shocked (and, you know, hurt, frustrated, confused…) when John makes a pass at her.
  • John decides to write his parents letters telling them how abandoned he feels by both of them. He knows it will hurt them, but he doesn't really care.
  • Things are icy between John and Marisol after that. She agrees to go to a zine convention with him so he can see her interact with other girls.
  • They go to the convention together, and right away, Marisol starts spending time with a girl named June. They go dancing together, and John gets super jealous.
  • Marisol decides to leave with June for New York. She wants to escape from her life and figure herself out more, and though John's upset, he knows her mind is made up.
  • He meets her the morning she leaves and says goodbye; she tells him that she loves him as much as she can.
  • John is down in the dumps, but he decides that he's willing to give this whole love thing another shot.
