Character Role Analysis

The Station Inspector

If there’s anyone in this book who’s a caricature, it’s the Station Inspector. You can almost see him stomping his feet and tugging on the end of his moustache in frustration every time Hugo slips out of his grasp. It’s like watching (or reading) an episode of Tom and Jerry.

The Station Inspector is the one person in the book who really doesn’t believe in Hugo’s capabilities; he treats him like a little rat of a thief and laughs when he says that he’s been taking care of the clocks. He’s also one of the reasons Hugo has to live in hiding all the time. Talk about a killjoy.
