Love After Love Questions

Bring on the tough stuff - there’s not just one right answer.

  1. What’s the difference between loving yourself and being a narcissist? What in this poem gives you an idea about the dividing line?
  2. What’s the nature of the relationship between the poem’s speaker and “you”? How do you think this speaker knows “you” so well?
  3. The speaker says you ignored yourself for “another.” Do you think this was an actual, separate person (i.e., an ex-lover), or could it be just a different version of “yourself”? How can you tell?
  4. Do you think there are really multiple versions of “you”? Do you think the speaker believes that? What parts of the poem support your answer?
  5. What does it mean to “Feast on your life”? How would the speaker answer that question?
