Character Analysis
Marie Tomlinson is Mr. Green's secretary. Young, pretty, and European, Marie becomes friends with Obi by criticizing Mr. Green and praising Clara. Obi succumbs to the flattery. Yet, though Marie denigrates Mr. Green, she reveals that she thinks he has a point when he suggests that educated Nigerians expect too many luxuries and privileges from a senior civil servant position. She doesn't seem to recognize the hypocrisy in her criticism. The privileges were originally created for Europeans who held the positions, and now Europeans are complaining that Africans who hold those same positions shouldn't have the same privileges.
