Psycho Scene 12 Summary

  • Outside the Fairvale Church (which has a helpful sign on it saying "Fairvale Church"), the Chambers meet Sam and Lila.
  • The Sheriff says he went to the motel to talk to Norman, and the boy was alone. The Sheriff didn't see the old woman in the window.
  • Chambers tells Lila and Sam to report the missing person and the theft.
  • Lila wants to go out to the Bates place, so the two of them decide to head out.
  • They plan to register as man and wife (scandalous) and then search the place.
  • At the motel, we see a shot from upstairs, from Norman's perspective. He sees them from the window where his mother had been sitting.
  • Norman comes downstairs and offers to check them in.
  • Sam says he needs to sign in to get a receipt for his boss.
  • Sam and Norman and Lila all seem tense and nervous.
  • Lila and Sam head off to the cabin (#10).
  • Lila is determined to look in Cabin 1; she thinks Norman took the money from Lila.
  • She also thinks Norman did something to Arbogast.
  • And Sam and Lila mosey around the motel to Cabin 1.
  • They search around; Sam notices that the shower curtain got torn down. You'd think Norman would have replaced it, but to be fair, he's been busy sinking people in the swamp.
  • And Lila finds one of the torn bits of paper that Marion threw in the toilet; it has the figure $40,000 on it.
  • Lila thinks that means that Norman knew about the money.
  • She also thinks Arbogast talked to Mrs. Bates. So Lila is determined to talk to Mrs. Bates.
  • Sam decides to find Norman and talk to him while Lila talks to the mother.
  • Sam finds him and says he'd like to chat with Norman while Lila naps.
  • But Lila isn't napping; she's sneaking up to the house.
  • The ominous strings come up; just like all the others, though, Lila doesn't listen.
  • She enters the house…
  • Cut back to Norman and Sam.
  • Sam seems super tense, and is trying to grill Norman, which seems dumb, but we haven't really gotten any evidence that Sam's an especially bright guy.
  • Anyway, Lila searches upstairs in the house, but Mrs. Bates isn't there. Which is weird, because there's a wardrobe of woman's dresses.
  • Lila is startled by her own reflection moving in the mirror.
  • And the bed looks like someone has been sleeping in it.
  • So where is the mother anyway?
  • Sam is still talking to Norman and being very confrontational. Norman is getting cranky. "My mother and I were more than happy," Norman says. Okay, Norman.
  • Lila snoops around more. Sam provokes a confrontation with Norman by talking about his mother, causing him to get suspicious.
  • Sam, you're not supposed to make him suspicious, you dope.
  • Sam all but accuses him of stealing the money. He also tells Norman that they're going to talk to Mrs. Bates.
  • Norman figures out that Lila is at the house. He struggles with Sam and clonks him in the big dumb head.
  • Lila comes down the stairs and sees Norman running up to the house.
  • She hides on the stairs to the fruit cellar. Norman goes upstairs.
  • Lila goes into the fruit cellar. Uh oh.
  • Down in the fruit cellar, she sees a woman sitting in a chair.
  • She touches the woman on the shoulder, the figure turns around…and it's a corpse.
  • Here's the "scree! scree! scree!" again on the soundtrack; bad news for Lila.
  • A figure bursts into the fruit cellar in women's clothes, wielding a knife.
  • It's Norman in a wig. Sam runs in a second later and wrestles him to the ground.
  • There's a shot of the corpse, watching. Then fade out.
