(3) Base Camp
Tom has it pretty hard: he has to stay in haunted houses, beat witches to death with sticks, rescue kidnapped children, and sometimes survive on a diet of hard bread and dry cheese. At least he doesn't have to help his mam with the dishes. The good news for us is that reading about Tom's trials is pretty easy.
Tom has a straightforward way of describing things in this book. It's not as though he has a lot of time to sit and think; he has to crank this book out pretty fast while he's off adventuring. So he doesn't have the luxury to mess around with complex language, and we're grateful for that.
