Attean

Attean teaches Matt how to survive. He teaches Matt how to set snares and create incredible bows and arrows, thereby ensuring the kid can eat some meat from time to time. Attean teaches Matt how to follow the Indian paths in the woods, and in doing so opens them up for Matt to explore and thrive in. Over and over again, Attean is Matt's human survival guide.

He's also his mentor. While Attean learns bits and pieces about white culture, Matt is the one drinking in the beliefs of the Indians. He may not always agree with them, but he respects and remembers them. That's all thanks to Attean.
