The monolithic creators of the Norton Anthology provide the first 19 lines of Sir Gawain read in Middle English by the incomparable Marie Boroff. You will want your students to hear this poem, since it is written in alliterative verse (something they might miss in translation) and because, well, it is so cool. While you are visiting this site, take a listen to J.B. Bessinger's reading of "Caedmon's Hymn." It is the earliest known poem written in English – but more than that, it will give students perspective on the evolution of the language.
