Stanza 5 Summary

Get out the microscope, because we’re going through this poem line-by-line.

Lines 25-30

It was the rampart of God's house
  That she was standing on:
By God built over the sheer depth
  The which is Space begun;
So high, that looking downward thence
  She scarce could see the sun.

  • After the brief aside of stanza 4, we're back to learning more about the young woman in heaven.
  • She's standing on a "rampart," or protective wall, around "God's house" (25).
  • It sounds like God's got a pretty expansive stack of bricks. It's as large as "Space" itself and so high up that our damsel can barely even see the sun.
  • We hope she's not afraid of heights.
