The Book of the City of Ladies Book 2, Chapters 1-5 Summary

  • Now that Lady Reason has finished speaking with Christine, her sister Lady Rectitude steps forward to chat while Christina keeps working on the City of Ladies.
  • Lady Rectitude gets down to brass tacks right away, saying that of all the women in history, a group called the "ten sibyls" is probably the greatest. This is a bold thing to say, since the sibyls were pagans and Christine de Pizan lived in a staunchly Christian country.
  • Lady Rectitude names the ten sibyls one by one and talks about how each of them became famous for predicting the course of history.
  • In Chapter 2 of Book 2, Lady Rectitude specifically discusses one sibyl named Erythrea, who wrote poems that convinced the Greeks they would eventually win the Trojan War and destroy the city of Troy.
  • Apparently, Erythrea also predicted the coming of Jesus Christ, who would be born from a virgin woman. Oh yeah, and she predicted Judgment Day, too, but we're hoping that one doesn't pan out the way she said.
  • Next comes the sibyl Amalthea, who also liked to predict the future and did it pretty accurately. She sold six books to the King of Rome that completely predicted the future of the entire empire, so they were pretty useful for the King, even though he couldn't change the future either way. Lady Rectitude then asks Christine (rhetorically, mind you) if there was ever a man who did this sort of thing. The answer is no, apparently.
  • Chapter 4 of Book II just gives more examples of female prophets who gave some really accurate forecasts about stuff that was going to happen. The same is true of Chapter 5. The last prophet mentioned was able to show the future to her husband by having a bunch of savage animals appear outside his bedroom. It's kind of weird, but hey, that's how the old story goes.
