Janet Evason Belin Timeline and Summary

  • Janet appears on Broadway in Jeannine's world, in what seems to be March of 1969. She reappears in Whileaway almost immediately, and has no clue what's going on.
  • Janet is sent from Whileaway to Joanna's world, and this time, she's been filled in on the plan. When she arrives, she materializes on top of a desk in the Pentagon.
  • Janet's appearance in Joanna's world results in a media frenzy. She's interviewed on television and the radio, and at least one parade is held in her honor.
  • At some point during all of this, Janet finds herself in Jeannine's world again, and picks up Jeannine at the Chinese New Festival.
  • Back in Joanna's world, Janet picks up Joanna, too.
  • Janet takes the other two J's on a joyride, and they wind up in Anytown, U.S.A. There, she chooses a house at random, walks in, and introduces herself to the all-American family who lives inside. Enter the Wildings.
  • Janet lives with Joanna in a hotel suite for six and a half months, while Joanna shows her around Manhattan. Jeannine flits in and out of the place too, and sometimes Janet kicks her.
  • Janet goes with Joanna to a party on Riverside Drive. It's her first time interacting with women and men in a social setting, and she's bouncing up and down—until the men in the room start patronizing her, that is. When she and Joanna try to leave, the Host of the party assaults her. She breaks his arm.
  • Janet decides to move out of the hotel suite and in with the Wildings.
  • In Anytown, U.S.A., Janet attends women's luncheons and tours science and fashion fairs. When Laura Rose Wilding confesses that she loves her, Janet takes her to bed.
  • Janet, Jeannine, and Joanna wind up in Jeannine's world somehow. While there, Janet attempts to purchase some cream for her athlete's foot, but the pharmacist won't sell it to her without a prescription.
  • Janet and the other two J's are suddenly brought to Whileaway, and Janet is finally reunited with her wife and family.
  • Back in Joanna's world, Janet sits up chatting one night with the other two J's. Inexplicably, they suddenly find themselves "somewhere else" (7.5.26)—that is, in Womanland with Jael.
  • Janet listens as Jael explains how she brought the women together. Janet is both perturbed and gratified to hear that Jael hasn't been able to find her way through Whileaway's defense systems.
  • Along with the other two J's, Janet accompanies Jael through the underground cities of Womanland and up to the Manland surface. At a Manland recreation center, the group meets Jael's contact, who brings them to the quarters of a Manland Boss with whom Jael intends to do business.
  • Janet, Jeannine, and Joanna watch while Jael assassinates the Manland Boss.
  • Along with the other two J's, Janet travels with Jael to her home in Vermont. There, she walks in on Jael as she's making love to an automaton, and finally gets a sense of what sex looks like between women and men. (She is unimpressed.)
  • Jael asks the other three J's for their support in the war between women and men; none of them respond right away.
  • Back in Joanna's world, Janet gets together with the other three J's (and the omniscient narrator) for a Thanksgiving meal at Schrafft's. When Jael renews her request for support, Janet refuses, prompting Jael to tell her that the plague on Whileaway was actually her doing. Janet refuses to believe her, and leaves with Laura.
