Jeannine Nancy Dadier Timeline and Summary

  • During one of her regular shifts at the library, Jeannine notices newspaper headlines about a strange woman who appeared out of thin air on Broadway, then disappeared.
  • Her boyfriend, Cal, shows up at the library to pressure her into coming "out for a coffee" (i.e., back to her apartment, where they can have sex). Jeannine tries to tell him that she's too busy (i.e., she doesn't want to), but eventually gives in.
  • Jeannine appears inexplicably in Joanna's world, in a cocktail lounge where Joanna is watching Janet Evason be interviewed on television.
  • Back in her world, Jeannine is picked up by Janet at the Chinese New Festival.
  • Jeannine begins to appear in Joanna's home, where she runs through walls and gets trapped behind the mirror.
  • Jeannine rides along with Janet in Joanna's world, as Janet picks up Joanna from the side of the road. The three women go joyriding together, but Jeannine disapproves.
  • At some point during all of this, Jeannine appears on Whileaway with her cat, Mr. Frosty, but is quickly sent back.
  • While Janet and Joanna live together in a hotel suite in Joanna's world, Jeannine flickers in and out, and sometimes gets kicked by Janet.
  • With Joanna suddenly visiting her world, Jeannine takes the subway to 42nd Street, and the two women go shopping. Inside a women's clothing store, Jeannine is bullied into buying a pair of red fishnet pantyhose that she doesn't want and will never wear.
  • Jeannine and Joanna meet up with Janet, who's having bad luck at a pharmacy. Suddenly, the three women find themselves in Whileaway.
  • Back in her own world sometime later, Jeannine dreams of Whileaway. She cleans her apartment as she packs for a trip to the Poconos, where she'll visit her family.
  • During her vacation, Jeannine's family pressures her to date some of the local men. When she leaves a dance to be alone for a little while, Joanna appears (as a voice in her head) and scolds her for being so weak and indecisive.
  • Jeannine's brother comes looking for her, and tries to pull her back inside; when he does, he suddenly realizes that he's holding Janet's arm, not Jeannine's. Janet, for her part, is none too pleased to have been grabbed so rudely.
  • Janet disappears and Jeannine is back. Her brother pulls her inside and tells her to choose someone, anyone, to marry.
  • Jeannine begins dating a man named Frank, the son of a friend of her mother's. She doesn't much like him, but she fantasizes about their possible future anyway.
  • Frank admits to Jeannine that he's married, but tells her he's separated because his wife is "emotionally disturbed" (6.6.4). Jeannine doesn't recognize that this is probably code for "dissatisfied with our marriage, and won't do what I want."
  • Jeannine goes out to see a play with her brother, sister-in-law, and Frank. Afterwards, she gives in to another bout of sadness, and Joanna shows up again to berate her for being so useless. Jeannine demands to know what everyone else wants from life, and is momentarily pleased when Frank tells her that he's working on his B.A.
  • Jeannine telephones Frank's mother's home the next morning, hoping that she might catch Frank. When he comes on the line and asks her to a game of tennis, she lies and says that she'll need to check her schedule first.
  • Instead of calling Frank back, she dials Cal instead, and tells him to come and get her. She also tells him she'll marry him.
  • Back in Joanna's world, Jeannine tries her best to ignore the fact that Janet and Laura are involved.
  • Jeannine finds Janet's vibrator, and doesn't know what it is. Joanna lies and tells her that it's a dangerous Whileawayan communications device.
  • As the three J's sit up chatting one night, they suddenly find themselves in Womanland with Jael.
  • Jael takes a liking to Jeannine, and it seems to be mutual. Along with the other two J's, Jeannine follows Jael through the underground cities of Womanland and up onto the Manland surface. At a Manland recreation center, they meet Jael's contact, who guides them to the quarters of a Manland Boss with whom Jael plans to do business.
  • Jeannine, Janet, and Joanna watch as Jael assassinates the Manland Boss.
  • Jael brings the other three J's to her home in Vermont, where she asks for their support in the war between women and men.
  • Back in her own world, Jeannine throws off her engagement to Cal.
  • In Joanna's world, she meets up with Janet, Joanna, and Jael for Thanksgiving dinner at Schrafft's. When Jael renews her request for support in the war, Jeannine agrees to help.
  • As the group parts ways, Jeannine takes Jael out to show her around the city.
