Stones into Sequels
Did you know that Mortenson has another book? He does. It's called Stones into Schools. Hmm… that sounds familiar. Well, will you look at that? The last chapter of this book is also called "Stones into Schools." What a coincidence.
The final chapter is basically a set-up for the next mission of Mortenson's quest for world education. By the end of Three Cups of Tea, he's drunk about three hundred cups of tea and educated the bejeezus out of Pakistan. He has his sights set on Afghanistan, but he can't do it alone, so he meets with a man named Sadhar Khan, who agrees with Mortenson's mission of education.
It's Khan who utters the line "We must turn these stones into schools" (23.112), a line more quotable than anything said by the Khan in Star Trek II. Mortenson knows that Afghanistan is going to be more dangerous than Pakistan—new landscape, new cultures, new land mines. But it's his calling and… well, you'll have to read the next book to find out.
