Can we just call him Papa Bear? Although he's technically commander of the King’s Musketeers, Tréville also serves as a surrogate father figure for the soldiers. For D’Artagnan, Tréville is both role model and mentor since Tréville is a Gascon who once came to Paris as a penniless youth hoping to make his fortune.
When the novel opens, Tréville is a wealthy nobleman and well established at court as a master of intrigue. Early on in the novel, we see his deft ability as a negotiator. He and the Cardinal frequently compete in order to relate to the King different versions of the same event. As the novel progresses, however, Tréville’s role recedes, perhaps because D’Artagnan’s need for guidance similarly decreases.
