Moses "Mo" LoBeau Timeline and Summary

  • Mo goes to wake up her BFF Dale and then run the café for a while together in the morning while her guardians—the Colonel and Miss Lana—are out.
  • A detective comes in asking lots of questions because he's investigating a murder that happened out of town.
  • The Colonel returns and relieves Mo and Dale of duty. Dale's stolen their neighbor Mr. Jesse's boat, so he's going to go return it and ask for reward money.
  • Mo and Dale go to the races with Dale's older brother Lavender, whom Mo has a debilitating crush on. Dale gives Mo five dollars of the reward money and they settle down for the race, which ends with Lavender crashing and getting injured.
  • Mo goes back to the house where Dale and his mom (Miss Rose) live and keeps an eye on Lavender. That's when the Colonel calls and says he's going to pick up Mo right away because there's been a murder and Mr. Jesse is dead.
  • Mo is at home in bed when Dale sneaks into her room in the middle of the night freaking out because he thinks that he'll be accused of the murder—you know, since he stole the boat and was the last person to see Mr. Jesse.
  • While Mo is trying to calm him down, they look out the window and see a strange man watching them. They scream and run to find the Colonel, only to find Miss Lana instead. She's home from her trip, but says that the Colonel has left and she doesn't know when he'll return.
  • The next day, Mo goes to check out the crime scene and finds a bloody oar. Bingo—she has herself the murder weapon. She also convinces Dale to tell the detective that he was the last person to see Mr. Jesse.
  • Mo helps Miss Lana to plan a memorial service for Mr. Jesse, and the whole town shows up even though they didn't like him much when he was alive.
  • She also hears the detective talking to the reverend about how Mr. Jesse gave the church a hundred bucks every week for years and wonders where he got that money.
  • Mo and Dale man a booth at the Mimosa Festival to raise money for Lavender. When she gets home, though, she finds her house ransacked and Miss Lana missing.
  • Mo learns that the man who took Miss Lana is a bank robber named Robert Slate, and that he's asking for a ransom.
  • Miss Rose takes Mo back to her house and takes care of her while the detective continues to investigate the case.
  • Mo starts taking calls from Robert Slate, who demands a ransom of a half a million dollars. One day she gets a call from the Colonel, though, who tells her that he's escaped and that she shouldn't trust anyone.
  • She goes back to her house with Dale and retrieves a packet of papers that the Colonel told her to find. Deputy Marla corners them there and Mo realizes that she's been working with the murderer. Oh no…
  • Mo and Dale manage to overpower Marla and go back to Miss Rose's house, where they learn that Dale's father is also involved—he's been bringing supplies to Robert Slate.
  • The Colonel shows up to save the day just in time, and they tie up Dale's father, then Mo and Dale follow the Colonel to Mr. Jesse's house with the hope of finding Miss Lana.
  • Peeking through the window, Mo and Dale see that Slate is prying open the floorboards to look for money. They rush in and push him into the hole in the floor and cover it with a table until the Colonel comes as backup.
  • Mo is thrilled when Miss Lana shows up safe and sound with Detective Starr. She's surprised when the Colonel goes through the packet of information and learns that he was Robert Slate's lawyer before he lost his memory.
  • In the end, the café reopens and Mo happily goes back to her normal life. She's just so pleased that everyone she loves is still around her.
