Touching Spirit Bear Chapter 9 Summary

  • Cole is battered with rain as he lies there and tries to stay alive. He thinks about the people in his life and how they probably wouldn't even care if he died right now.
  • Then he watches a sparrow feeding her baby birds in a nest nearby. He wonders why the mother bird even bothers taking care of the babies instead of just leaving them to fend for themselves.
  • Because he's so injured, Cole keeps drifting in and out of consciousness. When he wakes up again, he sees Spirit Bear and is terrified…but the bear doesn't come over to finish him off.
  • He (Cole, not the bear, silly) starts screaming out for someone to help him, but there's no one else around. The rain turns into a full-fledged storm with lightning and thunder, and Cole feels completely helpless as lightning strikes a tree next to him and takes it down.
  • He wonders what happened to the baby birds in the tree: Are they okay?
  • We wonder if someone hasn't just let a little compassion slip out by accident…
