Actress Grace Kelly married Prince Rainier on this day in 1956, becoming Her Serene Highness, Princess Grace of Monaco. She retired from acting, and not even frequent collaborator Alfred Hitchcock could convince her to come back. He offered Kelly the lead in 1962's Marnie, intending it to be her dynamite comeback. Kelly was totally on board. The people of Monaco? Not so much. The role in question was that of a thief, and her royal subjects had zero interest in seeing their princess play a common criminal.
