Naturalist John Muir was born on this day in 1838. He was one of the first people to fight for the conservation of forests, prairies, swamps—all of that wilderness stuff. If you've ever seen Rise of the Planet of the Apes or Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, you're familiar with his work. No, he wasn't a posthumous director; portions of those monkey movies were shot in Muir Woods.
