The Battle of Fallen Timbers began on this day in 1794. It was the last big battle of the Northwest Territory Indian War, which pitted the United States against the American Indians, as well as some lingering Brits. Why is it significant? The United States' victory there is basically where the state of Ohio comes from, as the Treaty of Greenville, which ended the conflict, opened up modern-day Ohio to settlers. The American Indians ceded parts of Michigan, Indiana, and Illinois, too, which jumpstarted the settlers' westward expansion and put the kibosh on British influence in the Midwest.
