Martin Luther King, Jr., delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial on this day in 1963. King's call for an end to racism is one of the most memorable speeches of all time—and to think he almost cut the part about having a dream. See, the night before the speech, King asked his aides for feedback. You know, like any good writer would. One of his confidantes suggested he ditch the dream stuff because it was clichéd. Plus, he'd used it in previous speeches. King stuck to his gut and kept it in anyway; the rest is oratorical history.
