The Red Badge of Courage was first published on this day in 1895. Stephen Crane's book, which takes place during the Civil War, is widely regarded as one of the finest war novels in American literature. Ernest Hemingway believed it to be one of the finest novels of any genre in American literature. Not bad for a young man who didn't actually have any war experience himself. Crane was more about the baseball field than the battlefield. He played catcher for three different colleges.
