sep 23 Learn More Neptune Discovered


The planet Neptune was discovered on this day in 1846. Its first moon, Triton, was discovered that same year. As far as moons in our solar system go, Triton is the black sheep because it orbits Neptune in the opposite direction of Neptune's rotation. Neptune has thirteen moons in total, all of which, like Triton, were also named after Greek or Roman water gods, sea nymphs, or especially intimidating dolphins. Fine. We made the last one up.
