University of Delaware

Hallmarks and Quirks

Things I'm Good At:

  • Actionability and initiative. Can you say student-led ban of tobacco on campus? You can indeed, and breathe free while doing so.

  • Research money, baby. Can I get a holla for the scholah?

  • Education programs. And engineering and nursing and agriculture. Phewf.

  • Hall of famers. Football NCAA Division I (FCS). We are big sports fans here.

  • Ice skating. It's a Delaware thing. Triple Salchow that.

My Top 5 Must-Haves:

  1. The cheesesteaks on South Street in Philadelphia.

  2. Your camera for Baltimore's beautiful Inner Harbor and oh-so-trendy Fell's Point.

  3. Seasonal trappings, clothing, and equipment. Sun, snow, and bonfires are all for the taking here.

  4. Your dancin' shoes. I must have a celebratory attitude because there is always a party.

  5. A fridge full of snacks in your dorm room. No study sesh is complete without 'em.

Why You Might Have Heard of Me:

  • Tax-free shopping. Okay, well that isn't actually a UD thing, but all the students and their families get to enjoy it in this state. Cha-ching.

  • Want to study art history? Bring it. UD is one of only a few schools to even offer the major.

  • I'm considered one of the public "Ivies." No need for calamine lotion here—I'm not poison. In fact, all you're going to get is top-notch education.

On a regular Saturday night, you can find me...

  • If chillin' at the "beach" or the student center isn't what the night calls for, then adventures beyond the quad are only a short road trip away. With big cities all around, the UD student can get some over-the-top excitement in places like Philadelphia, Wilmington, Baltimore…even NYC or DC, if you like acronyms.

  • Speaking of letters, I'm big on Greek Life, so you can find students rushing around practicing their Latin and Olympic feats of glory on any given day. On-campus joints are also my jam.

  • Want to chillax? Hit the quad and watch old movies while munching on popcorn. Want a stroll? Wander Main Street and check out the action; take in a bite and a sip, or pick up a cool new pair of loafers to putter around in.

  • Last but not least, if serenity is what you want, then a simple drive out into the wild blue yonder will result in hiking, mountain biking, skiing, boarding, cycling, mountains, camping, dog walking, nature enjoying, pumpkin picking, apple orchard visiting and restful peace.

Favorite Hangouts:

At UD, there's something for everyone, from pizza and burgers to a micro-brewery. It's all located on campus or a skip, hop, and a jump away from it. So toss the choices into a hat and pick one out. A good time will be had no matter where you end up. Here are just a few selections:

Quirks:

  • I'm keyed into politics. A few of my first students signed the Declaration of Independence. No biggie.

  • We have a Harry Potter fan club and it's not uncommon to be treated to the magical sight of folks running around with brooms between their legs.

  • I was the first college to offer study abroad options, and no, it's not because people are scrambling to get out of Delaware. I'm just a cool school that appreciates wanderlust.

Famous Alumni:

  • Rich Gannon and Joe Flacco, football Hall of Famers

  • Mister Vice President, Joe Biden, affectionately known in Delaware as "Amtrak Joe"

  • Johnny Weir, the Olympic ice skater

  • Susan Stroman, film and theater director
